Fashion Tips

Mixing Prints Successfully

Have you ever been afraid to mix prints because fashion gurus have told you that it was frowned upon? While it seems like a fashion taboo, mixing prints is actually a surefire way to make you stand out from the crowd. If you are eccentric and like to put together polished, unique looks, mixing prints helps you achieve this goal. Whether you are mixing an animal print blouse and a patterned skirt, or an abstract printed dress and a plaid overcoat, endless options are available once you master the perfect pairing techniques.

Choose Your Main Attraction

The first step toward mixing prints successfully is selecting one piece to function as the main attraction in your outfit. If you absolutely love the leopard print skirt you recently purchased, choose this item as your standout of the day. Once you have selected the main print you want to use, choose an accent print to compliment the standout item. Use a similar pattern or pull from the color palette of your main item to select a blouse and jacket to pair with the skirt. A dotted black blouse plays to the pattern and color palette of the leopard print skirt without drawing attention away from your standout piece.

In cooler months, choose a jacket that compliments both your standout piece and your accenting items. Go for a jacket with a brown tweed pattern to adhere to the color palette you have already created with your skirt and blouse. If you have a leopard print jacket in a different color, add this piece to your ensemble for an even more unique look. The two different color leopard prints compliment one another without being overpowering.

By breaking up the placement of the prints, you prevent clashing and present a one-of-a-kind look.

Break It Up

An easy way to mix prints successfully is to break up the two printed items so they are not laying on top of one another. If you have a pinstripe blazer, wear this over a dress with a pattern along the hemline. Since the print on the blazer is physically removed from the print adorning the bottom of the dress, it creates balance in your overall look. Similarly, if you want to wear a printed blouse, choose a neutral trouser and accompany that with a printed shoe. By breaking up the placement of the prints, you prevent clashing and present a one-of-a-kind look.

Another way to achieve this goal is to break up the prints with a chunky belt. Select a floral printed blouse and a neutral striped skirt, then place the belt along your waist to create definition and separation between patterns. Choose a belt that compliments both the blouse print and the bottom print to ensure cohesion in your outfit. If you want to be a bit more daring, select a textured belt to add an extra dimension to your unique style. If you are not much of a belt person, try tying one of your favorite sweaters around your waist to achieve the same effect.

Whether you are looking for ways to mix patterns every day or for set occasions, these tips will help you steer clear of major fashion faux pas. When you exercise your individuality, you become more confident and self-assured in who you are and in what you wear. Never be afraid to rock a striped shirt and polka dot pants!

Our Favorite Spring Trends of 2019

Spring officially began on March 20th! With that, fashion trends have officially moved from winter to spring. You don’t have to put away all your cozy clothes but you should begin incorporating these 5 trends into your everyday looks!

It’s Spring but you don’t have to give up dark colors. Instead, find pieces that have accents of color. Embroidered patterns are a great way to subtly incorporate texture and color into any look.

Pink Jacket

Spring mornings are notoriously chilly so make sure you have the right jacket for the weather. We suggest a long coat that will protect you from morning winds made from a lightweight fabric. You can find a similar pink jacket here!

White Lace

Throw your winter drab into the back of your closet and bring the lace back. White lace isn’t just for brides- it’s the perfect springtime shirt. Classy, yet understated, a lacey shirt will match everything in your closet.

High Waisted Shorts

Every lady needs at least one pair of high waisted shorts. Preferably, you’ll choose a pair that really stands out! They’re easy to dress up and even look chic with a tee! We love this one because of its built-in belt that you can tie in a bow or a loose knot.

Be Bright

The coldest days are behind us. It’s time to shed your winter skin – a.k.a. your long sleeves, sweaters, and sweats. Show the spring spirit with a brightly colored dress. We love this dress because it literally embodies spring; with sunshine yellow color and butterfly sleeves.

Now it’s your turn! Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter @yourbestfashionfinds and share your favorite springtime looks! We can’t wait to see.

Our Guide to Spring Spring Essentials

Spring is (finally) in the air! Now it’s time to start stocking up on the spring essentials that will keep you trendy and dry.

Rain Jacket

Every year I forget I need a new rain jacket until the first April shower arrives. Trust me your bulky winter jacket might do the trick for a while but you’ll quickly overheat. Instead, try a light rain jacket large enough to accommodate a sweater.

Ear Muff Warmers

Spring mornings are notoriously chilly; often cold enough for frost to form. That doesn’t mean you want to bust out your winter hat for an hour.  Hello, frizzy hair! Instead, grab a pair of ear muffs. The headband hardly touches your hair and the fluff balls keep your ears toasty.

Chic Umbrella

Don’t settle for a boring umbrella. Cute ones cost about the same and show off your individual flair. I’m in love with the clear, patterned bucket umbrellas. My favorite being the SMATI umbrella, available on Amazon. The birdcage dome keeps more rain off and they offer an array of patterns from abstract to floral.

Long Sleeve Dress

It’s just not warm enough for cute, summer dresses. Save yourself the trouble of layering and find a light, long sleeve dress. If it’s extra cold out, wear thigh high boots. It’s a chic way to hide a pair of long, warm socks underneath.

The Shimmery Cropped Pant

Skip the khaki! Opt for floral or geometrical patterns and stand out from the crowd. Pair with complimentary colored flats and a dress shirt for the perfect outfit look.

Rain Boots

Thankfully, rain boots are in! Just about every brand offers a unique version of the classic rain boot. Don’t let a rainy, muddy morning defeat you! Just make sure you have a waterproof bag in the car and a change of shoes more appropriate for work.

Water Resistant Flats

You might be thinking- you just get rain boots, why do I need water resistant flats?! Well, they look like a nice pair of heels you’d wear to the office! Try a pair of Blondo’s and see for yourself.

To Tuck or Not to Tuck Your Shirt

To tuck or not to tuck in your clothing? We used to have a pretty strict idea of what constituted professional attire. Wear a nice pair of pants or a skirt and tuck in your shirt! But the world is ever-changing. Shirt tucking is no longer just for the serious or even required in the office!

So, how do you know when to tuck? Don’t think of tucking as a way to look professional. Instead, think of it as a tool for creating shape that can be used for at any time!

1.The Smooth Tuck

The smooth tuck makes me think of the office. Something about the smooth, crisp lines of the shirt tucked into a nice pair of trousers feels professional. Feel free to wear this tuck at any time but be prepared to feel like the boss lady that you are.

  1. Put your shirt on.
    1. Button if necessary.
  2. Smooth shirt down.
  3. Pull pants or skirt up over the shirt.
  4. Adjust!

If the shirt doesn’t want to sit right (let’s face it, we’ve all been there), try folding the corners of your shirt back before sliding your pants or skirt over top.

2. The Front Tuck

The front tuck happens to be my favorite. As a tall woman with large hips, I find that this method of tucking emphasizes my hourglass shape, slims my waist, and creates a nice line of flow down my body.

  1. Put your pants on.
  2. Grab the front of your shirt and gather it (slightly) in the middle.
  3. Tuck the front gather and adjust.

3. The Billowy Tuck

The billowy tuck is a simple, cute way to add volume and contrast to your look. This method doesn’t focus on smoothing your clothes out and creating a streamline effect. I find this looks best with cardigans.

  1. Put your shirt on.
  2. Instead of smoothing it down, allow it to get pushed up a bit while you put your pants on.
  3. You may have to adjust this tuck more than the others. It doesn’t always fall perfectly but the end product allows the overflow of the shirt to fold over itself.

4. The Side Tuck

This is a great choice for long shirts that border on being a dress. I love long shirts but I hate feeling like my body disappeared underneath me. Plus, my pants are super cute and I want to show them off! That’s where the side tuck come into play.

  1. Put your shirt on.
  2. Gather slightly left or right of the middle of the shit.
  3. Put your pants on, tucking the side that you have gathered.
  4. Adjust!

I tuck in my shirt, in some capacity, almost every day and I’m always trying out new ways to do it. Some work and some don’t! It really depends on the fabric and structure of the shirt. So, if a specific style of tuck isn’t working for you, try it with a different top and don’t get discouraged.

The Tall Girls Guide to Clothing Length

If you’re above 5’8’’ you have probably experienced difficulty finding pieces that account for your length. At 5’ 10’’, I’ve had my fair share of fashion disappointments; jeans either go to my ankles or fit around my waist, rompers give me wedgies, and many dresses have been passed on for looking more like a shirt than a dress.

Luckily, I love being tall and have chosen to own it. Instead of being frustrated, I try to try to treat each shopping trip as a treasure hunt. With a little bit of searching and a few basic guidelines, you’ll be adding to your wardrobe in no time.

First off, you can wear whatever length you desire. Midis, maxis, minis, ect… are all open to you. The issue is not whether you should or should not wear a certain length but in finding a dress in your desired length.

For me, finding knee-length dresses is a challenge, as most only go to the top of my thighs. My workaround? I’ll find a long dress that fits perfectly in my bust and hips (long dresses tend to be more tea length on me), cut, and hem the dress to the desired length. It’s a lot simpler and quicker  it sounds. Check out free sewing tutorials on YouTube to get started!

If I’m searching for a longer dress, I always check the hem before purchasing. Many dresses can be let out at the bottom and end up  your desired length.

If you have long legs, don’t be afraid to flaunt it. Skinny jeans look amazing on you. If they don’t come all the way down to your ankle, incorporate your socks. Find ones that compliment your outfit and instead of hiding them, pull them up over your ankles and fold them. It’ll look stylish and make sure your pants look long enough.

Don’t be afraid to wear loud prints on your pants, either. As tempting as it is to choose neutral colors and blend in (especially if the pants don’t fit perfectly), embrace you

Each and every clothing company has a unique way of creating and sizing their pieces. For this reason, a romper or jumpsuit is particularly hard to eyeball. So, when it comes to rompers try them on or (if ordering online) make sure the company allows for returns. It’s really the best way to make sure you’re getting your monies worth.

Heels or Flats?

Whichever work best for you! Women everywhere are embracing their height and their style throwing the “ Tall girls can’t wear heels” rule right out the window.

Just about all hard and fast fashion rules are meant to be broken so don’t be afraid to experiment! As long as you feel good you’ll look good too.

5 Ways to Wear Leggings to Work

Leggings are every girl’s best friend. Need to work out? Grab a pair of leggings. Having a night on the town? Throw your leggings on. Just hanging out on the couch? Leggings, please!

But, what about when you have to go to work? We’re here to tell you that, yes, with the right styling, leggings fit right in at the office. Here are 4 ways to integrate your favorite pair of pants into your business attire.

1. Leggings are the new tights. Seriously, they’re warmer and you don’t have to carefully shimmy in and out of them to avoid rips and runs. Make sure you have a few neutrally colored or black pairs handy to wear under your skirts and dresses. If you’re worried about sock lines try stirrup leggings. The stirrup will cover your ankle and hide your socks in the process! You can even layer knee or thigh high socks overtop the leggings!

2. That being said, don’t be afraid to express yourself with boldly patterned leggings. Florals, geometric, or bright colors are a great way to add dimension and personality to your everyday looks. You can keep your look balanced by pairing with simple, single colored tops or dresses.

3. Add a pair of trendy, cut-out leggings to your wardrobe. When choosing, aim for cutouts below the knee. It’ll still add a wow factor to your look without any worries of looking inappropriate. If you find the perfect pair with cutouts or fades any higher just make sure to pair with a longer dress, romper, or skirt. A knee length cardigan also works really well!

4. If your office fluctuates in temperature, is freezing during the summer, or a fiery inferno in the winter consider the Capri legging. All of the same rules apply. They’re just shorter! When choosing a shoe, we suggest a simple flat.

5. Wear them under your pants for an extra layer of warmth. We suggest a pair of light, fuzzy ones! No one will ever know and we won’t tell.

Once you hit 30, your past the point in your life where you should be shouting “I have nothing to wear!” at your wardrobe every single day. After all, you’re a woman of class and quality. This doesn’t mean filling your closet with the same old items from your 20s. So withstanding budget constraints, we advise you to stock your wardrobe with some statement pieces instead of piles and piles of totally ill-fitted and mismatched clothing.

Here are 8 must-haves for your wardrobe which will give you a stylish, minimalistic look for all occasions.

A Silk Blouse

A crisp button-down silk blouse looks sophisticated, but feels comfy! Plus, it can be easily dressed down with a pair of jeans or dressed up with dress pants or skirts. Choose your favorite colors and accessorize to emulate your style. You don’t have to spend a bunch of money on this item either! Just make sure you try it on for fit purpose!

A Special Occasion Top

A tastefully embellished or sequined top will be your life-saving wardrobe item when you are clueless about what to wear to dinners, parties or formal events. Go for the one that will flatter your curves and rid you of your wardrobe hang-ups.

Red Lipstick

Red lipstick will take you ten notches up on the hotness meter each time you decide to wear it! So buy a promising shade of red; it could be of an electric crimson or a warm scarlet color, whichever complements your skin tone best! If you find lipstick to be dry, try a colored lip balm! They add a hint of color and moisturize.

Our Winter Closet Clean Out Tips

[spb_boxed_content element_name=”intro” type=”coloured” box_link_target=”_self” padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Many of us are well into winter and our closets definitely reflect it. At least mine does! My cutest outfits have been shoved to the back and all available closet space has gone to sweaters, cardigans, and vests. My dresser is in an even sadder state- besides a few pairs of jeggings, it’s full up of sweatpants, leggings, and joggers. This doesn’t leave too much room for date night outfits.

This problem came to a head recently, when my husband asked to take me to dinner and I had to spend an hour digging through my winter clothes to find something cute. When we did get to leave, I spent the night freezing! Something had to change and I decided that something was my winter wardrobe.

[/spb_boxed_content] [spb_boxed_content type=”coloured” box_link_target=”_self” padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Condense the Cozy Clothing

For me, winter means cozy and cozy means fuzzy. Unfortunately, fuzzy also means bulky, which means my closet and dressers quickly become cluttered. That’s why I put away all my bulky items (except for one bulky PJ set) and only kept my cutest warm clothing hanging. I also dug my blouses out and kept complimentary cardigans hanging.

[/spb_boxed_content] [spb_boxed_content type=”coloured” box_link_target=”_self” padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Flat Storage Bins

Okay, I know I said I put away my coziest clothing but I actually bought some under the bed storage tubs and got to organizing. I had enough room for three long bins, so I sorted through my favorite pieces and put together outfits. For easy access, I put my favorite (but ugly) warm pieces in the first bin, the flow over in the second, and any summer clothing that would be complimentary with winter clothing in the third.

I still had quite a few pieces of clothing and no more bin room so I gathered up the remains and decided to donate them!

[/spb_boxed_content] [spb_boxed_content type=”coloured” box_link_target=”_self” padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Invest in a Quality Coat

You won’t need as many layers (sweaters, long sleeves, tank tops, ect.) if you have a warm coat. I tried to get by on discount coats and jackets but have never found them to be warm. Eventually, I learned that money spent on a well-made coat is money (and closet space) saved later.
